1938 Steyr Roadster

This 1938 Steyr Roadster is one of three known to exist and the only one believed to be in the United States.  It was built in Steyr, Austria and the body was built by Glausser in Dresden, Germany.  The Steyr was a factory demonstrator shipped to Berlin in 1938.  Power is supplied by a 2260cc overhead valve six-cylinder engine producing 80 hp.

  • Design and Styling:

    • The Steyr Roadster featured sleek, aerodynamic lines typical of the late 1930s, with a long hood and an elegant, open-top body.
    • Its design often included art deco elements, with chrome accents and a luxurious interior, catering to the tastes of affluent buyers of the era.
  • Engine and Performance:

    • The car was equipped with a robust engine for its time, often a 6-cylinder unit, which provided a good balance of power and reliability.
    • Performance metrics, while modest by today's standards, were competitive during the pre-war period, making it a desirable vehicle for both city driving and countryside touring.
  • Technological Innovations:

    • Steyr was known for incorporating advanced technology into their vehicles. The Roadster likely featured innovations such as independent suspension and hydraulic brakes, which were cutting-edge at the time.
    • The car's engineering was a blend of Austrian precision and a focus on driving comfort and safety.
  • Cultural and Historical Significance:

    • The 1938 Steyr Roadster was part of a vibrant automotive scene in Europe just before World War II. Cars from this period are often prized by collectors for their historical value and design aesthetics.
    • Steyr vehicles, including the Roadster, were less common than those from larger manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz or BMW, adding to their exclusivity and appeal to collectors.
